Guest Story: No One Fights Alone

When Judy first stepped through our doors, she found more than just a place to stay—she found a community. Judy, a breast cancer survivor who had already faced multiple surgeries, discovered a mass on her tongue and needed specialized treatment at Duke Cancer Institute. Caring House became her sanctuary during her difficult journey and third battle with cancer.

Traveling from Sneads Ferry to Durham for treatment wasn’t easy, but Caring House made it possible. She found not only affordable housing, but also a place that felt like home where she found comfort in the shared experiences of others facing similar challenges. Caring House offered not just affordability but a sense of belonging.

“Caring House relieves so much stress when you’re dealing with cancer, because you come here and it’s almost like a family – you’re all in the same boat.”

Even after she completed her treatments, and challenges persisted, the bonds formed within these walls proved to be a source of strength. When she rang the bell to mark the end of her treatment, several guests from Caring House were there to support her. And just a week after returning home, she traveled 5 hours to celebrate another guest’s triumphant finish, standing by them as they rang the bell. “Those are the kind of friendships we build here.” As Judy puts it, “If you haven’t had cancer, you don’t know cancer—it changes you.” Her story is a powerful reminder that no one fights this battle alone.
