Whispers of gala season began in mid 2022, as our team started to plan our biggest fundraising event of the year. On Saturday, January 28th, 2023, our Annual Benefit Gala came to life, gathering over 300 people at the Washington Duke Inn to celebrate, “A Night Among the Stars.” 

The evening honoring Dr. Donald McDonnell and Mrs. Mary McDonnell featured delicious food, custom cocktails, and a live auction with amazing packages donated by local businesses and community members. Among blue hydrangea centerpieces and glittering tablecloths, attendees heard from the McDonnells, Duke Cancer Institute’s Steven Patierno, our Executive Director, Sasha Zarzour, and our Board Chair, Robinson Everett, Jr.

Former Caring House guest, Niki Plomaritis, was our guest speaker of the evening, sharing her inspiring story of her cancer journey and her time spent at Caring House. The night wrapped up with dancing fueled by live music from local band, Soul Psychedelique. And as the evening came to a close, as tables were cleared and goodbyes were exchanged, we were left with post-event exhilaration and resounding hope. 

“Every Gala is special, but this year’s was REALLY special, to be able to support Caring House’s mission together and honor those who fight cancer outside our House, like the McDonnells, and those who fight it in our House, like Niki and all our wonderful guests whose courage and kindness nourish our healing community. It’s humbling and inspiring to take a night to celebrate what a difference Caring House makes,” said Robinson Everett, Jr., Caring House Board Chair.

Thanks to our sponsors, donors, and attendees, our 2023 gala raised a net total of $199,249 to support our Home Away From Home. We are so grateful to everyone who made this evening a success and for their generosity. We look forward to many years of nights like this one!
