Laurie Landeau Foundation, LLC

Former guest Daniel Shortridge’s friends, husband and wife Bob Maze and Laurie Landeau, came in from New York to stay at Caring House as caregivers for part of his treatment for Stage IV Mantle Cell Lymphoma, a rare form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Before they headed back home to New York, Laurie asked for some information regarding how she and Bob could donate to Caring House. Laurie had cared for her own mother during her battle with cancer, and she mentioned how impressed she was with how Caring House treated not only the patients, but also the caregivers. In all, she believes that Caring House is the result of “a brilliant conception and execution.” Each year since their stay at Caring House as caregivers to Daniel, the Laurie Landeau Foundation has donated $10,000.

Donating to Caring House

The need for Caring House is great. At least 7,000 new patients begin treatment with the Duke Cancer Institute every year. Duke has nearly 9,000 inpatient and 175,000 outpatient encounters for cancer treatment each year.  The North Carolina Center for Health Statistics projects that there will be 50,000 new cancer diagnoses in the state in 2010 alone.

Since opening in 1992, we have provided a home to over 5,000 cancer patients. Most are from North Carolina, but almost 1/3 come from other states and countries.

For many, the affordability of Caring House means the ability to come to Duke for the high quality treatment that is needed. Guests are asked to pay $30 per night toward our costs, but the actual cost for each night is $82. No one is turned away due to an inability to pay.

Caring House is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, governed by a Board of Directors comprised of business, academic, community, and medical leaders.  Annual operating costs are $450,000 of which only 25% comes from donations by guests.  This leaves 75% of our funds that must be raised through fundraisers, and through donations from individuals, corporations, and foundations.

The Foundations and Corporations listed above have been consistent supporters of Caring House. Some have recently joined our mission, while others have been in support of Caring House for several years.

If you would like to join this group of supporters, please contact Executive Director Sheridan Townsend.
